I usually never rant about that type of topic, but it's been now several years I have this feeling I wanted to share: deviantart is getting really bad as a community because of the huge decrease of interactions between deviants.
By that I imply that people taking time to add a comment, even very quick, are getting rarer and rarer. Faves are cool but they are passive and there is no interaction. Comment is the exchange of opinions, occasions of laughing, confronting opinions, sharing ideas about art and other stuff, etc. The first years I was on dA, it used to be fun, deviants were more bound between them. Now there are barely 5~6 people who takes the time to comment my stuff. I thank them very much but I am sad it is not like it used to be before.
Don't get me wrong, I don't complain about my popularity. I know I will never be popular for some reasons and it is not my purpose here. The problem is real even for popular deviants, I have seen so many popular deviations getting 500+ faves and only a dozen of comments. It is pity people don't want anymore to express their love (or maybe dislike, imo it is important to be open-minded to criticism) for art with words or got too lazy to do so. Now people have 20K+ faves, do they even look again at their faves? Faves have lost their meanings.
I think the main reason for this issue is groups. At first, clubs turning into groups was a great feature and I was the first to acclaim it. Things became much easier for groups. Too much easy. Groups have expended increasingly, people create tons of random groups, they join hundreds of groups and they submit thousands of deviations to get more exposure. The only result is: flooding everyone's devwatch inbox, which makes people stop checking their inbox. Deviantart even includes the option to join groups without receiving contributions in inbox. Because of that, I guess most of people do not take the time to check the new deviations in their inbox, which I can understand. I myself have joined less than 20 groups and I receive already more than 100 deviation notifications per day. I try never to skip them but it remains huge and I doubt the majority of people care about checking them regularly, or if they do, they do it quickly, possibly fave, but do not take the time to interact with deviants. Well there are also many deviants who probably don't care so much about this, but it sad when you consider that deviantart is supposed to be a community, not just galleries.
That was my theory about that tendency caused by groups. Am I the only one who feel this way, having a kind of nostalgy for the previous dA? Do you have other ideas about the causes of this?
I'm seriously considering posting my stuff on another site, which one would you recommand?
To finish, I got so happy to see some awesome Ninja Gaiden cosplays over deviantart recently:
Regent of mask:
First time I see him cosplayed, and such a good cosplay! I was happy, but it made me regret once again how bad was the story of Ninja Gaiden 3 while it had badass characters like him!
Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z:
The game isn't released yet and they already completed cosplay for it! Awesome! Makes me wanna play more!
I guess most of you already saw that awesome cosplay and photo but just in case have a look! And it is so cool to see it became a Daily Deviation! One of the rare time I approve a Daily Deviation XD
